Connected Along the River: How Walkways, Bridges, and Transit Unite Grand Rapids
Bridging Grand Rapids: A connected future along the Grand River.
When envisioning the future of the Grand Rapids riverfront, it’s about more than impressive sports venues, shimmering amphitheaters, or striking new developments. It’s about connection – the kind that brings us closer to one another and to every corner of the city.
As the Grand River corridor continues to transform, it's clear: The true strength of the city lies in its ability to unite us all – physically, culturally, and socially.

Bridging the Gaps - Literally and Figuratively
For years, the Grand River quietly divided sections of our city, with most bridges originally built for railroad use. Over time, many of these bridges have been adapted for pedestrian use. This transformation began in the 1980s, notably with the conversion of the Blue Bridge and the Gillett Bridge into pedestrian walkways when rail traffic ceased. Today, this evolution along the Grand River has expanded to include enhanced riverwalk areas and integrated trail networks, fostering greater connectivity across the city.
From the iconic Blue Bridge, which connects to the heart of downtown and serves as the backdrop of countless photo ops, to the Sixth Street Bridge in the Monroe North area, these structures represent the unity at the heart of the GR& vision. In Grand Rapids, access to nature, culture, and opportunity transcends ZIP codes.
The evolution of connectivity is only beginning. Imagine walking from the hotel district to the Grand Rapids Public Museum, walking back to catch live music at the Acrisure Amphitheater, and then back across to the Westside for a late night bite and drinks – all without ever needing a car. That’s the future unfolding before us.

Walkable, Bikeable, Unstoppable
As the riverfront evolves, walkability and bikeability are becoming everyday realities. Wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, scenic trail loops, and a covered skywalk system are connecting downtown destinations.
Whether you're commuting to work by bike or taking a sunset walk along the water, the design of the Grand Riverfront makes it both possible and enjoyable. Whether you're running a quick errand, meeting friends at Studio Park, or gliding over to Amway Stadium for a game, this enhanced ease of travel adds a layer of convenience that matches the energy of the city.

Public Transit That Moves with Purpose
Connectivity means options and accessibility. With stops all along the Grand River, The Rapid and the Downtown Area Shuttle (DASH) provide accessible public transit throughout downtown.
The Rapid’s network is expanding to ensure that buses run frequently and serve key destinations along the Grand River. Paired with DASH’s free, eco-friendly routes, residents and visitors can hop on and off between entertainment venues, business districts, and cultural landmarks without worrying about parking or traffic.
Seamless integration between transit hubs and pedestrian pathways makes transitioning from the bus to the riverwalk easy, intuitive, and inviting.
Connection is Inclusion
At its core, connectivity is about equality. It’s about ensuring that every resident and visitor, from college students to retirees, can experience the beauty, vibrancy, and opportunity that the riverfront offers.
This transformation is founded on the belief that no neighborhood should feel excluded from progress, and no community should be left behind. Whether it's accessing a new job downtown, walking with the family to a riverfront playground, or simply taking a moment to enjoy the view, these bridges and paths are built for everyone.
