A History of Grand Rapids' Thriving Professional Sports Scene
With hockey, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soon soccer, Grand Rapids boasts an exciting lineup of sports teams that have become integral to the city’s identity. With all this, we wanted to take a deeper look into the professional teams calling Grand Rapids home and the history behind each one. But first, how did a right-size city like Grand Rapids even get here?
Grand Rapids As a Destination for Sports Fans
Any excitement around Grand Rapids’ professional sports teams is, of course, first anchored by the facilities they play in and the economic vitality these venues bring to the area, extending well beyond the teams themselves.
For example, Van Andel Arena, brought to reality in 1994 by Grand Action—a coalition of business and community leaders—was a key factor in bringing professional hockey back to Grand Rapids. More importantly, it aimed to revitalize the urban core of downtown Grand Rapids through a quality, affordable entertainment experience for families. The arena became the catalyst for the rebirth of a quiet downtown, evolving into a vibrant entertainment hub that contributes significantly to the local economy and establishes Grand Rapids as a key destination for concerts, family fun, and sports events.
Hockeytown 2.0: Grand Rapids Griffins Pride since 1996
Founded in 1996, the Grand Rapids Griffins are a beloved part of the city’s sports culture. Originally part of the International Hockey League (IHL), the Griffins transitioned to the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2001, after the IHL’s merger. As the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, the Griffins have served as a launchpad for many future NHL stars.
The team’s home, Van Andel Arena, has been a gathering place for thrilling matchups and community celebration. For nearly three decades, the Griffins have drawn fans of all ages, bringing the excitement of professional hockey to the heart of West Michigan.
Downtown Development: NBA Development League Right in GR
The Grand Rapids Gold originally launched in 2014 as the Grand Rapids Drive, the farm team affiliated with the Detroit Pistons. In 2021, a new partnership with the Denver Nuggets was formed, and the team rebranded to the Grand Rapids Gold, ushering in a new era of G League basketball in the city.
Playing at Van Andel Arena, the Gold offer fans an exciting opportunity to see future NBA talent up close. The G League has become a crucial part of player development for the NBA, and Grand Rapids is proud to play a part in that journey.
Rising to the Occasion: A Home for Women’s Professional Sports
The Grand Rapids Rise is the city’s professional women’s volleyball team, adding yet another dynamic element to the local sports landscape in 2024. Formed to bring the excitement of top-tier volleyball to the region, the Rise compete in the newly established Pro Volleyball Federation. Playing home games at Van Andel Arena, the Rise provide a thrilling display of athleticism and teamwork, drawing fans from all over West Michigan. This team has quickly built a following thanks to its talented roster and community involvement, offering another fantastic way for residents to enjoy live sports.
West Michigan Whitecaps: Take Me (Just) Out(side of Downtown) to the Ball Game
Similarly, LMCU Ballpark, originally established as Old Kent Park in 1994, embraced the mentality of “if you build it, they will come.” It saw immediate success with Class A attendance records in its first three seasons, has undergone several renovations and expansions, and remains strong, expecting its 12 millionth fan in 2025. The ballpark is home to concerts, Christmas light shows, festivals, and so much more.
Since 1994, the West Michigan Whitecaps have brought the charm of America’s favorite pastime to the Grand Rapids area. As a High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, the Whitecaps are part of the storied Midwest League. With home games held at LMCU Ballpark, this team has become synonymous with fun, family, and affordable entertainment.
The Whitecaps have built a strong connection with the community over the years, offering a classic baseball experience that’s perfect for summer nights. Many players have moved up the ranks to play with the Detroit Tigers, and it’s always a thrill for fans to see familiar faces making it big in Major League Baseball.
The Future of Soccer in Grand Rapids
Soccer fans in Grand Rapids have a lot to look forward to, with plans for a new professional soccer team on the horizon. This team will bring a fresh, professional level of play to the city, thanks in part to the new soccer stadium planned in the heart of the city.
Supporters of the proposed soccer stadium are hopeful for this same sports excitement around the new team and facility, as well as the broader benefits for the city in the next phase of Grand Rapids’ development. They envision the stadium as a vibrant hub alongside the downtown riverfront, bringing new energy and economic opportunities to the area.
This new addition aims to celebrate Grand Rapids’ passion for soccer, while adding to its rich sports history. As the dream of professional soccer becomes a reality, Grand Rapids further solidifies itself as a destination for athletic excellence and community pride.
A Blast from the Past: The City’s Soccer Heartbeat
And this wouldn’t be the first time Grand Rapidians have fallen in love with a local soccer team. Though they no longer compete at the professional level, Grand Rapids FC (GRFC) was once a cornerstone of local soccer excitement. Founded in 2014, the community-driven team quickly gained a loyal following. Playing in both the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and USL League Two, GRFC represented the city’s love for soccer and fostered a passionate fanbase. Matches at Houseman Field often featured packed stands, where fans cheered enthusiastically for their home team.
GRFC’s legacy laid the groundwork for what’s to come—a professional soccer team poised to play at the new stadium in Grand Rapids. This marks the next chapter in the city’s soccer journey, building on the foundation of support and enthusiasm established by GRFC.
A City United by Sports
Whether it’s the roar of the crowd at a Griffins or Rise game, the fast-paced action of a Gold basketball tipoff, or a summer night in the outfield at a Whitecaps game, Grand Rapids’ professional sports scene offers something for everyone. The city’s dedication to fostering sports and community spirit is clear, and with the upcoming soccer stadium and team, there’s hope to pull in an even bigger crowd.
