See Lyon Square Thrive: A Community Space on the Rise

In October 2024, downtown’s Lyon Square partially reopened following an extensive $12 million renovation to improve accessibility and promote engagement with the city’s riverfront.

Key features, such as heated pavements for the winter months, accessible pathways, and scenic overlooks, are already enhancing the year-round experience for community members and visitors.

Upgrades will feature increased greenery and improved landscaping through a unique approach. In collaboration with Rockwell Earthworks, the project was led by an inventive landscape apprenticeship program “designed to provide hands-on experience and training to individuals interested in landscaping and construction.”  Founder and President Jina Rockwell continued, “The goal is not only to equip them with practical skills but also to inspire a long-term career in the industry.”

While portions of the square are now open for public use, some elements are still under development.

The project is on track for full completion by the end of 2024, with aspirations to provide a fully revitalized space for community gatherings and events along the Grand River.
